1Q Interview: Freak Revolution and Embracing your Truest Self

I’m kinda in love with Pace and Kyeli right now, the women behind Freak Revolution. 

Freak Revolution is firmly rooted in the belief that it’s the outliers who change the world. As someone who has been called–and who has happily adopted–the title of “heretic,” I’m totally picking up what they’re laying down. 

Today in our 1Q Interview, Pace and Kyeli bring us a tip on how to embrace your fine freakish self…oh, and also, a poem. 

Q: What is something I can implement within a few days –or hell, what can I do right now to experiment with living the Freak Revolution? 

I’ll tell you something you can do right now, but I’ll warn you: it’s simple, but not easy.  Say out loud, “I would know myself in all my parts.”  Resolve to know yourself fully: every instinct, every resistance, every desire.  Throw off the comforting curtains of ignorance and denial.  Before we can connect with the world, we must first connect with ourselves.  The revolution begins within you. 

A freak’s not a freak ’cause of piercings or hair,
Straightness or gayness or tattooed or bare.
It’s not how you look or what gender you wed;
What makes you a freak is inside of your head.  

A freak is a person who doesn’t conform,
Whose thoughts wander ever afield from the norm.
It’s not a big checklist that sets you apart;
What makes you a freak is inside of your heart.
