LOL. I never have taken break dancing serious before, because I’ve only ever seen it as the in-your-face throw down machismo thang. Which is not my cup of tea. But this more fluid tutting and popping is very interesting to me. I also like how Phillip and his compatriots are telling stories with thier dance. The narrative nature of it is intriguing to me.

As much as we all like to poke a little fun at ‘reality tv’, SYTYCD really has increased the dance vocabulary of the American public, and allowed the light to shine on previously underground techniques. It’s a good thing!

I remember a conversation a long while ago when someone who shall not be named confided that she could not take break dancing seriously. Thanks for shouting out about it!
Pacman indeed is a modern master, though it should be noted that while he is an innovator, moves similar to his have been around since the late-eighties at least (that’s when I fell in love with the dance and saw some truly amazing, mind-bending movement — as an observer, not participant). Unfortunately, a lot of the more interesting body movement has been eclipsed by the more acrobatic stunts. There are a few hard to locate videos (on tape, not DVD) that demonstrate truly strange and other-worldly variations on the BBoy thing from the nineties, as well.

Yay Phillip Chbeeb. SYTYCD is one of my favorite shows, and watching him do his thing sure makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Love that he emailed you and agreed to an interview.

Maybe also it’s okay to show male artists, too. Sometimes I forget that it’s not just women out there creating. Isn’t that weird? For me, art and writing has turned into a female activity.

I am a big fan of Eddie Ching’s art. His work is mostly post-impressionistic but he also draws with a quill pen and ink. The colors that he uses is soft and his work is detailed. To see his work, check out his website at http://www.eddieching.com
