I have been in pain for round about two years now, I have found a balance of meds and approaches that take the worst of it. A good month is when I am only agonised for about a quarter of it, a bad month is when I notice I am really gone every third day, and the days in between are just recovering and building up to it. I have tried doctors but they like to say it is a mystery. Mystery or not, it's real to me, and I just count myself very blessed on the days when I am not in pain.

Funnily enough, my turning point recently came when I cut the medicine dose right back and took a pinch of what is prescribed, this made a huge difference to the headaches, which made me wonder, can the medicine actually make the headaches worse? Ai!

The Spoon Theory has helped me explain my limitations/conditions to a lot of people, and the But You Don't Look Sick messageboard (which is connected with that site) has been a godsend for support as well... I'm glad you found it, and that it connected with you.

I always think I look like I feel, too, and am surprised when someone will say things like "but we couldn't even tell it was that bad, why didn't you say anything?" The line between explaining and complaining is a line I am trying to be ever conscious of, and it's a tricky one to balance on.

Feel as well as possible, as soon as possible.

Thanks for posting the link to the spoon theory. My teenage daughter lives with chronic pain, we're waiting for the official diagnosis (everything points towards lupus). I can't wait to show her the website and let her read about the spoon theory!

Kamen used the mables as an analogy in her book "All in my Head" and that struck me and has stuck with me. Now I'm in the process of sorting out how many marbles each activity requires. You could look at it like what equals a teaspoon and tablespons. Like a walk is a teaspoon and writing or concentration is a tablespoon -- not all activity is equal...when you break it down, you can compensate better (before and after). It's a constant tweaking process. Also the mix of activity and rest works wonders! Recharing is key.

I really feel for you. I suffer occasional migraines, which completely shut me down with the pain and especially the nausea. those little "lights" going off send me into instant dread because i know what's coming. I honestly don't see how people who have them chronically can function. let alone the other stuff you have going on! as if the migraines aren't enough!

i also think people who've never had migraines (in general, let alone daily) don't understand how bad they really are. they think, oh it's just a super bad headache. yeah. times 20. plus having to be as still as possible to avoid making the pain worse. plus the throwing up.

people close to me have commented before about apparently healthy people parking in handicapped spots and how it annoys them, and I always tell them that chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia and lupus, or something like ms is one of those "invisible" conditions. the invisible factor almost makes it worse. people don't believe you're ill if you look "healthy."

wish i could send you some spoons...

May you find another drawer with extra spoons. The world needs your writing and perspective. And you need rest. It's so true, it's so hard to show people what you're going through when the illness is invisible. I'm glad the Spoon Theory helped and hopefully will help others understand why you live the way you do. Gentle hug.
