Needed: Camera recommendations
A month ago, our camera died. It was a Fujifilm Finepix E550. The flash was terrible; it took poor pictures in low light. It used a special USB cord that we lost. On the positive side, it had good custom control options so that we could take pictures on manual settings. It good lighting it was great, with nice picture quality. But then, on vacation the lens stopped working. It would make a horrible grinding sound, but not move. Luckily, we also had Eden’s Sony with us, so we were able to still take photos.
All of that is to say that we’re in the market for a new digital camera, and I’d like your best suggestions. Here’s what we want:
- Point and Shoot, not a fancy SLR-type
- Good flash so it can take good pictures indoors
- Nice color photos
- Small size
- SD memory card support
- Normal USB cable
- Preferable 4x or better optical zoom
- Easy custom controls (manual exposure, timed exposures, etc.)
- Nice LCD
- standard battery preferred (AA or AAA) rather than expensive proprietary battery
- Inexpensive :)
If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments. Thank you!

My husband and I recently replaced our last Canon with a Canon sd1000 and have loved it. It is inexpensive for what it is at $214 Its super tiny and is everything I could ever want from a point and shoot and more. It has 7.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom. ISO 1600. It does have the expenive propietary battery, but it is rechargable and it comes with one. To have a second one is nice, but really not necessary if you pay attention to to keep it charged. I thought I had left a comment, but its not showing up! So, anyway, check out the Canon sd1000. We recently purchased it to replace our Canon sd550 and have loved it. For what it is, its a steel at $214. It has 3x optical zoom, 4x digital, 7.1 megapixels with ISO 1600 and is so tiny! It does have a propietary battery, but it is completely rechargable. It has a great LCD and easy controls. We couldn’t be happier with it. To see some of our photos taken with it (without touch ups) head here:

I use a luminex and rebel I like both for different reasons. With my luminex I got a special memory card that converts to a usb and you can plug directly into a computer this is handy when traveling you don’t have to bring so many cords. Good luck.

When we wanted to get one for work and it needed to be decent but not too expensive I did a lot of reading about cameras. I ended up recommending a Canon Powershot - I forget the number but Canon has moved on to new numbers now anyway. We bought it and have never regretted it. It takes wonderful pictures, takes AA batteries, and has a display that folds out to allow you to take photos at weird angles. My mother, who worked in PR and did a lot of photography in her work always swore by Canon cameras.

I have a Cannon which I adore. It takes such wonderful photos, and although it does have one of those fancy batteries it is rechargeable and it comes with the charger. I find this to be such a great feature because I don’t have to keep buying batteries. My camera is a simple point and shoot model, not sure of the exact one but it is around two years old and still works great. My mom just got one of the new cannon point and shoots and loves it as well. Good luck with your search, I hope you find exactly what you are looking for.

We’ve had a number of Canon Powershot cameras and have never had complaints. One was replaced only because a child dropped it on cement. My current camera is a Canon Powershot S3 which is about as high as you can go in their non-SLR cameras and it’s a dream. It takes perfectly good auto setting photos, but if you learn to use the various functions you can take stunning shots. I am having the best time learning what it can do.
