Habitude for May

Much love to all you greenies out there who played along with April’s habitude. Sadly, I did not reduce my gas consumption one iota, even though I walked more places than ever, bunched together my car-required errands, and let a lot of stuff go undone rather than use the car to do it. How is that possible???

I did walk away from the reduce-your-gas habitude much more enamored with walking places than ever before. I took the “should I drive, or walk” option complete off my plate. If it’s walkable, it gets walked. And with Spring here, what’s not to love about that?

I live in a pretty walkable neighborhood, so none of my outings take more than 15mintues to walk each way. I’d like to up my exercise ante a bit, so my May habitude is to walk at least 30 minutes a day, in addition to my regular walk-to-work-and-the-grocer routine. Thankfully I have both a lovely three-mile urban lake loop nearby and a treadmill in the basement with a steady supply of favorite TV shows on netflix. (Current obsession: Grey’s Anatomy season two.) So I can easily get my 30 minutes in rain or shine.

Anyone else want to commit to a simple exercise goal for May?

P.s. Congratulation to Karla who got the cloth shopping bag for being the first person to sign on to Love Your Mother last month! I’d also like to send a bag to Aola for consistently chiming in with great greener ideas. Aola, shoot me an email with your snail mail. (moi at magpie-girl dot com.)Your package is waiting for you on my desk. Much love!

And, I got so excited I forgot to say Yes to the exercise.

I normally walk everyday but we have had so much rain it has been hard since my walking trail is verrrryyy muddy, but I will commit.

Rachelle…thank you, thank you, thank you!!! My kids were again amused and amazed at what simple things turn mom’s heart to dancing lately. (They still talk about the happy dance I did when Jen L’s altar kit arrived at my door stoop! ;) ) I love the bag…did I tell you that purple is my fave color??? :D

I’ve been fighting the headaches and duldrums with an all out determination to “get healthy” that I haven’t had the energy or desire for in at least 5-6 years! I joined Weight Watchers last week and have done pretty good food-wise, but haven’t put the emphasis on the “move more” quadrant of the circle yet. You inspire and give me hope that simply walking will help! I’ll certainly join you and aola in the walking! Now that the weather is better, I’m planning to walk the “track” at work. It’s really just a sidewalk around the baseball diamond…but 6 times around is a mile! Also, our local YMCA just posted a summer challenge, designed to be accessible for those of us “fitness dropouts” on their membership roll. The kids cheered at the notion of getting to go swimming while mom walks the treadmill or does eliptical in the adjacent room (w/ glass wall to supervise kids in the pool!)

I hope the walking and fresh air is easing your headaches a bit too! As far as gas consumption for us…it’s hard to tell, b/c turning the AC on likely made up for any decreased usage for less driving. (And I’m so enjoying have a “new-to-us” vehicle with air now, after 12 years of no air!!!). But I definitely made a more concerted effort to consilidate and cut down road trips! Thanks for your great ideas! –Karla
